“Find true love? I can hardly believe what you’re saying.—wait.” Coy focused her eyes on the necklace. She pointed to the stone covered beneath the blouse. “Did you actually steal my stone at the bazaar?”

Shela addressed Coy in low tones.“The stone has powers you would not understand. To have the shoes, an exchange had to take place.”

“But, it’s only a rock, Shela.” Burning with anger, she pursed her lips.

Holding the shoes in her arms, Shela placed her finger to her red lips. “Yes. But I know how to use the power. The shoes possess the ability to give pleasure, as well as pain. The stone is only a catalyst. Like myself, I see you’ve found your one true love.”

Coy shifted her weight to one foot and scowled. “Yes, Shela. Those shoes might have brought us together, but they almost ruined my life. If it wasn’t for meeting the love of my life, I’d have you put away.”

Shela flinched. “Like the sorceress, your own greed caused your grief. My dear, your troubles are over.”

“They’d better be over!” Coy turned to face Johns. Catching him by the hand, she demanded, “Come on—let’s go. I’ve had enough of this—black magic nonsense.”

As they walked down the stairs, periodically Coy turned to face Johns. “She can keep the damn rock. I’m just relieved to have those shoes out of my possession.” She breathed a sigh of relief.

Looking back up the stairs Johns asked, “You do realize that Neves is seven spelled backwards, don’t you?”

Coy hesitated. “You’re freaking kidding me.” She cast her gaze toward the closed door. The number seven shimmered in the evening light. “I swear this is some spooky crap. I want no part of this mumbo jumbo.”

When they reached the car, Johns opened the door for Coy. With burdens lifted, Coy slid across the seat. In seconds, he got inside the vehicle then backed out of the parking space. Once he reached the end of the driveway he stopped for oncoming traffic. Hearing a clap of thunder, Johns paused, casting his eyes upwards through his tinted windshield. “Looks like a storm approaching.”

Immediately, Coy’s skin went prickly. This storm had a familiar feel. The skies were darkened, the winds blew, and lightening crawled across the sky. Above the apartment building, gloomy clouds gathered into a massive heap.

Cowering in memory, she stared at Johns with a fretful expression. An eerie feeling crept over her, urging her to look back. Leaning slightly, she peered into the rearview mirror. Seeing Erin hiding in the shadows of the building, Coy narrowed her eyes. When Erin stepped up the stairs of the apartment building, her motives became clear. In horror, Coy shook her head in disbelief. Grasping her forehead with trembling fingers she cried out, “Erin! No!”
