Travel

  • This road is all roads:

my prayers to this road is to all roads on which I will travel.

  • On the open road

open me to all I encounter

    Lord of All Ways.

  • Lord of the Pathways,

go before us on this trip,

and bring us safely and happily to our destination,

we who are your grateful followers.

  • This road I step on joins with all the other roads, forming an irregular net over the Earth, as if we could capture Her, an absurd and forlorn hope:

the net is only a decoration for her, like a golden hairnet on a beautiful woman.

So as I set myself on the road,

    as I begin my traveling,

I make this offering to the Lord of Paths,

and I make offering to Earth.

But this net, and all roads, end at the sea.

So surprisingly, as I begin this travel across the land, I make offering to the Sea God, who receives all roads in the end, and thus encompasses all travelers on them.

Rider on the Waves, may the enclosing be of protection, not incarceration.

And even the sea is in the care of the Earth, lying across Her like a jewel around the neck of a beautiful woman,

and even the Sea God Her child.

So I make this fourth and final offering before setting out to the Earth,

ending my prayer where all roads and sea and traveling begins.

  • Both Healers and Guides,

go with the ambulance I'm pulling over for.

Air Spirits:

  • The Spirits of the Air play about this plane as it flies.

May they seek their fun in keeping its flight smooth

    rather than tossing it around.

May they compete among themselves to see which of them can best succeed in this.

Castor and Pollux:

  • Dioskouroi, Saviors,

    bring me through this storm:

safely on the shore I will offer to you.

Earth:

  • From the air, I can best see the land below,

    the land below, spreading out,

    spreading out, Mother Earth,

Mother Earth, your airborne child praises you.

  • Wide-Extending Earth,

who cares for her children as a mother should:

    be smooth, be without obstruction,

    beneath and before me,

as I travel on this journey.

Bring me to my destination and home again safely,

    to contentment.

The Elements:

  • Air, be wind for his sails.

Fire, be sun on his face.

Water, be smooth ocean beneath him.

Earth, be the island from which he sails.

All this on a safe journey to his desired destination.

Forest Spirits:

  • Into the forest, laughing,

    guide my feet, Spirits of Nature;

    into its depths, conduct my heart;

into its mysteries, initiate my soul.

Ga
e
a:

  • Dancing Ga
    e
    pati,

Trumpet the jet engines' roars of my plane,

    clearing the way.

The God and Goddess:

  • Lord of grain and animals,

    Lady of fruits and plants,

may I find a place to eat off this exit.

Hekate:

  • My prayer today is to Hekate:

may the fire with which I bless you be one of her torches,

going before you to guide you on your way.

May she whom even Zeus honors, and who receives a portion of every prayer,

    hear this one;

may she provide a light, not just of protection until you reach your destination,

but to illuminate you that you might not miss the beauty of the journey in anticipation of your goal.

Herakles:

  • Wanderer,

    Laborer,

who never rested until you laid yourself,

    live and in pain,

    on your own funeral pyre,

    lit by a friend,

from which to rise, once mortal,

to a seat among the immortal gods:

    Traveler, aid those who travel;

    aid me on my way.

    Succeeder in trials,

bring me to success through your invincible strength:

closest of the gods to man.

Land Spirits:

  • Spirits of the land we're driving through,

hand us off, each to the next,

    smoothly as we go.

We honor each of you with this prayer.

Lords of Space and Time:

  • Time is Space, and Space is Time;

Space-Time is the fabric of the Cosmos.

I'm a little embarrassed to invoke such a thing for such a little reason, Lord of Space and Time, but it's like this:

    I'm late for an appointment.

As the time grows less, may the space grow less rapidly.

I'm not asking you to bend the rules of physics,

just to make the way smooth for those ahead of me,

so that it might be smooth for me,

so that I'll arrive in time, or at least not too late.

Manannán mac Lir:

  • May my car flow through the undulating traffic as effortlessly as your chariot over the flowerplained ocean,

    Manannán mac Lir,

    you whose waves are horses.

  • Oirbsen mac Lir,

smoothly sailing, and safely to shore,

God of the journey, to you I pray:

go before me, clear the way.

  • Manannán, guide my flight today.

May my airplane's wings rise like sails,

    likes wings of gulls.

    May the air be smooth,

be like a flowered plain beneath your chariot wheels.
