Stay low!” Derek ordered. I had no intentions of moving.

Derek stood tall, towering over me while using his bike for protection, and began firing shots back. Animal, Doom, Skull and the others followed his lead.

Suddenly, Derek dropped to the ground like a ton of bricks. He’d been shot. The MC continued in the battle of gunfire against the others.

Oh my God, Derek! Are you okay?” I asked as I looked him over. He’d been shot in the shoulder. His face was mangled in pain.

Almost as soon as it began, the gunshots ceased shortly after we went inside. Animal came inside the abandoned airport building to check on Shadow.

It was the cartel! They crossed the border and came to attack us themselves. Whatever is going on, shit’s really about to hit the fan.”

Where’s that fucker, Rico?” Shadow demanded.

He’s with Skull and Doom. They took him back to our headquarters. We figured it would be best to hold them for a while. Either for information or for ransom. Can’t go wrong either way.”

Good thinking. Let’s get back there with them. I need Stacie to fix up my shoulder.”

How are you going to ride back to headquarters?” I asked Derek.

I’ll just have to rough it out until Stacie can fix me up. It’ll be ok. Hold on tight.”

He could see the look of fear in my eyes. Fear of being shot at again, fear of him wrecking the bike and fear for my life. If the cartel had found us at the abandoned airport, wouldn’t they surely find us at the Black Wings headquarters? What if some of the cartel was there waiting for us? I had to keep Shadow safe. I also had to keep myself safe. The cartel was no people to mess around with.

Chapter Five

Better Days

It took quite a while to reach the Black Wings headquarters. I’m not sure exactly what I expected, but this was not it. The building looked like an abandoned warehouse. I supposed I had thought it would be much brighter, in a better neighborhood and maybe had some color and life to it. No. This was a dull, gray building. It looked cold and deserted. Shivers traced down my spine as I thought of some of the business deals that may have taken place here.

Here, come with me, Tara” Theresa stood waving at me from across the room.

It’s ok”, said Derek, “go ahead and go with Theresa. She’ll make sure you have everything you need. I’m going to find Stacie and have her take care of this”, he said as he pointed towards his wounded shoulder.

Theresa led me up a flight of stairs to the second floor. When we entered the doorway, I could see the rest of the MC sitting at a bar while they all talked about the cartel attack.

Would you like a drink?” Theresa asked.

“
Please. Gin and tonic.”

A few moments later, she found me sitting at a corner table and handed me my drink. I began to nurse it as I asked her questions about what was going to happen.

Shadow will make sure that he gets to the bottom of this. Most likely, he will find out who ordered the attacks and take care of things from there.”

But who’s going to tell on the leader? Nobody is going to do that. He said the cartel is no one to mess with. If…”

Rico will talk. He will tell everything we need to know. The guys have him locked up in the basement. I’m sure as soon as Shadow is ready, he will find out more information.”

I pounded down a couple of more drinks. My nerves were a mess and the drinks seemed to help calm them. I was only at my corner table for about an hour before Derek showed up.

“
I see they’ve been taking care of you” he said as he flashed his incredibly white teeth with the biggest smile I’d seen in some time.

“
Yeah, Theresa got me some drinks. Derek, I’m worried.”

“
It’s ok. I told you that I will take care of you. Till the end. I need you to stay put for now. I need to interrogate Rico.”

“
Is there somewhere else I can go?” I asked. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my day getting hammered.

“
Let me take you to the bunks. You can lie down for a while and get some rest. You look like you could use some. There are also some showers if you’d like to get cleaned up.”

I hadn’t noticed the blood on my arms from taking care of Derek’s shoulder wound back at the abandoned airport. He was right, I did need rest and a shower sounded good, too.

I followed him up one flight of stairs, to the third floor. He showed me around the showers. The women had their own separate showering area from the men. After I learned where everything was, we headed up to the fourth floor. There were various rooms, almost like a hotel. He led me to his room.
