Epilogue

“Is your secret identity really likely to torpedo your brother’s campaign?” Sadie asked. She and Jake sat curled together on a couch in the hotel lobby, his arm tucking her close to him as one hand brushed up and down her shoulder.

Jake shrugged. “I guess we’ll know soon enough.” No matter how carefully she listened, Sadie couldn’t hear even a thread of anxiety in the comment.

The night before, they had escaped the banquet as Kamille ran interference for them. They managed to duck any questions long enough to make their way back to Jake’s hotel room. At that point, he had pulled away from kissing Sadie long enough to ask her to write up a press release.

“Are you sure?” she asked. “What about your brother?”

“Ian will survive. Ian always survives everything.”

Shaking her head, Sadie said, “Maybe you should make the announcement yourself.”

A small smile played around the corners of his mouth, and it was all Sadie could do to keep from reaching up to kiss him yet again.

“Absolutely not,” he replied as he ushered her into his room and opened his laptop. “I wouldn’t have realized how much I was living in my brother’s shadow, limiting my own life, if not for you and Kamille. I want you to write up the story.”

She grinned. “And can I interview you for my book, too?”

Wrapping her in his arms, he whispered against her lips, “You get an exclusive.”

It had been a while before they made it back to the computer.

They had actually written a short news story together, then sent it to several romance book bloggers.

And yet, for the first time ever, Sadie wasn’t worried about anything—not tenure, not her book, not even the wild emotions rolling through her.

All she wanted to do was stay right where she was, leaning on the most wonderful man she had ever met.

Contented. I don’t think I ever knew what it meant to be truly contented until now.

When the doorman signaled to let her know her taxi had arrived, she called out to Amelia, who was in the process of writing something on the wrist of one of the models, who was still wearing a kilt. As the curvy blonde skipped away, she waggled her fingers back at the faux Scotsman.

“Get his number?” Sadie asked on their way out the door.

“Better,” Amelia replied. “I found out what he wears under his kilt.”

Jake’s peal of laughter rang out across the driveway covered by the portico, and he was still shaking his head when he moved to put the suitcases into the trunk.

Sadie waited until he stepped closer again and wrapped her arms around him. “So I’ll see you next week?” she asked.

“I’ll be there,” he whispered, his lips brushing against hers. “And we’ll figure out what’s next. Together.”

His kiss pulled her into him, leaving her almost breathless with desire. “Hey,” she said softly, punctuating her words with kisses. “You know what?”

Although she couldn’t see it, she felt his smile against hers. “What?”

“I’m really glad you’re not the woman I thought you were.”

Acknowledgments

Books are never created in a vacuum, and I’m always worried I’m going to forget someone in the acknowledgments! This book was written during a particularly difficult time in my life, so there are even more people than usual to thank. If you should be here and you’re not, please know you’re in my heart. But here goes: Thanks are due to my editor, Alycia, for being patient as I sorted it all out. Thanks to Liz and all the Entangled family for such a fun shared world in which to write and the technical help to make it happen. To my family, for love and support above and beyond anything humanly reasonable. To Lateia for making Vegas the best trip ever—and, of course, for continued WD plans. To Deb for reminders not to hide, to Erin for word count parties, to Amber for reminding me I can do this, and to Clint for making me laugh and keeping me sane-ish. To all the Blazing Indies: y’all keep me steady. And always, most of all, to Isabel, with all my heart. I love you all.
