But the list of names I’d stolen was valuable. Plenty of people had been keen to get their hands on it. And, I imagined, the German authorities might find the information of interest, too. But was I that guy? Was I prepared to trade the list for my freedom, with no concern for the sacrifice Jane Parker had made in protecting it? Was I the weasel Victoria feared I might be? Or was I better than that? More noble? More good? The type of man who might opt to destroy those pages the first opportunity that came my way?

I stared long and hard at my reflection in the rearview mirror of that police car, and I did my very best to decide for myself.
